Legends: Live & Local
One day, while talking with Jane Wiedlin — founding member of the chart-topping Go-Go’s and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee — I found myself reflecting on what it was like growing up as a music-obsessed kid in Santa Cruz, California.
Jane’s band had once felt impossibly distant to me. Their Talk Show album was the first record I had ever bought with my own money, and she and the rest of the Go-Go’s seemed untouchable — like a different species of supercharged humans living inside this magical world. I wondered how different my life might have been if, as a teenager, I’d simply had the opportunity to sit down and talk with someone like Jane.
There had been no roadmap into that world — no mentor, no guide, no one to explain how to navigate the strange and mysterious ecosystem of creativity, performance, and cultural life.
No matter where I’ve lived since, Santa Cruz has remained a touchstone for me, and one of my greatest hopes has always been to create something meaningful for the next generation of artists and dreamers growing up there.
As we talked, Jane and I began imagining what that might look like. Drawing on my background in cultural production and live programming alongside Jane’s decades of artistic experience, we slowly shaped the idea that would become Legends: Live & Local.
The concept was simple but powerful
Pair emerging local artists with iconic musicians and legendary figures who might otherwise feel out of reach. Each event begins with an intimate live conversation exploring creativity, identity, resilience, and artistic life. Emerging artists then perform their own work before being joined onstage by the featured legend for a collaborative set that bridges generations, experience, and community.
What audiences see onstage is only part of the equation. Long before the doors open, artists spend time rehearsing, exchanging stories, sharing advice, and building genuine creative connection. Those behind-the-scenes moments of mentorship and collaboration are as important to the project as the performance itself.
The response to the first event exceeded anything we expected
The response to the first event exceeded anything we expected. What began as a deeply personal experiment in providing the guidance we never had and building community quickly sold out, with demand far beyond venue capacity. More importantly, it revealed a genuine hunger for intimate cultural experiences rooted in conversation, creativity, and connection across age groups. The pilot event went on to generate more than 400,000 organic online views.
The inaugural date featured Jane, followed by a second gathering with Lol Tolhurst of the Cure and David J. Of Bauhaus / Love & Rockets. Future editions are currently in development.
Designed to feel intimate, generous, and deeply human, Legends: Live & Local blurs the line between conversation, performance, mentorship, and communal experience.
